New Steinway D Concert Grand Piano

with Spirio-r Hi-Def recording

New for 2023: Dolby Atmos AND Steinway D Concert Grand with Spirio r technology

Steinway Spirio Concert Grand Piano

I’d like to share with you some of the exciting changes that I’ve made in the studio - I now have an amazing, BRAND NEW Steinway Concert Grand Piano that Gwilym Simcock helped me choose from Steinway Hall in London.  It is a full-size Steinway D, which now includes Steinway’s own MIDI playback and recording system which they call the ‘Spirio-r’.   This really is amazing to use in the recording studio - it records and plays back the piano performances, and at much higher resolution than MIDI systems.  It is freaky to see the piano play back the actual performance - as if a ghost is playing it!

Artists anywhere in the world can email me their MIDI piano performances which I can then record for them on this amazing Steinway Concert Grand piano.

And we can now correct and edit live takes, without having to do drop-ins or re-takes. It also means I can re-record the piano after its been played - to eliminate spill from other musicians or noises in the room.   (So a vocalist can even sing right next to the pianist during a piano take, and any vocal spill can be eliminated by re-recording the actual piano performance using the Spirio-r technology).  This is so cool in so many ways.

Dolby Atmos

Additionally in 2023 I have upgraded the monitoring in the control room for Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 mixing - which is SO MUCH FUN!  It is a sonic thrill - and now that Apple Music requires it (and all Apple products default to have Dolby Atmos switched to ‘on’) EVERYONE needs to be providing Dolby Atmos mixes alongside their stereo masters.

“the world's finest piano now with high resolution player piano technology, capable of capturing and playing back live performances without missing a single detail or nuance.” (This is what Steinway’s press release says…)

“When recording or playing back high-definition MIDI recordings this piano has to be seen (& heard) to be believed.” (This is what I say…)

Curtis is first and foremost a musician of extraordinary ability and taste. Everything he does, whether recording, editing, mixing or mastering is guided by the highest aesthetic sensibility.
